As a designer I tend to approach an interior as an artist rather than a technician. I consider a room a canvas comprised of elements one would find in a painting.
While a beautiful carpet is a background landscape, and a staircase is a sculpture, a chair or a table may become a study in form and texture.
Growing up and working in Carmel, California and the Pacific Northwest I am innately inspired by things that freely exist in nature. The outdoor world provides me with inspiration for our indoor living and working spaces.
The complex colors, forms and quality of light in nature are ever informative sources for a natural approach to design.
I also consider carefully and inquisitively the function of every interior. How it will be used, who will be using it and how it should look and feel as a backdrop to its owners life and work styles. These are all questions I pursue with the client initially, and continually throughout the design project at hand. To me, the best client is always someone who becomes part of the process. It is paramount that I do not simply create a “look” but to facilitate the creation of a lifestyle that intimately reflects the client.
With all this in mind, I believe it’s not just the formal qualities of form, shape, line, texture and color and light that begin the process; good design always starts with human beings. |
